Ricky our founder recently shot a video about the 15 rules that we train all our wedding videographers to follow to become an awesome videographer.

I am David Barden, the main cinematographer and owner of Snowbird Films, and as mentioned in a previous article, I believe in the EPIC training model that we established in 2020. This acronym stands for Everything, Perspective, Initiative, and Cinematic, and each of these elements is paramount in creating a truly epic wedding film.

Before a wedding videographer can focus on this approach, we like to train them with a set of rules that we believe every videographer should follow. This EPIC acronym then helps remind them of our overall approach.

15 rules to follow to become the very best:

1. Communicate with the couple before the wedding to understand their vision and preferences. 2. Use experience to make technical and logistical decisions that ensure the best possible results. 3. Interact with wedding party and guests while blending in or directing as necessary to get the shot. 4. Record professional audio for speeches, readings, ceremony, and vows. 5. Focus on big moments and reactions to them, particularly shots of key people such as parents, grandparents, siblings, and close friends. 6. Pay attention to personal touches that make the day special for the couple. 7. Position tripods for optimal shots while considering impact on guest view and use additional discreet cameras as needed. 8. Work well with other suppliers, particularly the photographer, to enhance their day. 9. Learn the schedule and plan for each shot while being prepared for changes. 10. Work with the DJ to ensure optimal lighting for first dance and dancing shots. 11. Record key photographic moments from different angles during photo sessions and look for interactive moments between guests. 12. Use a combination of tripod, gimbal, and handheld shooting depending on the situation. 13. Use a combination of manual focus, auto focus, and assist modes as appropriate. 14. Edit the film to enhance the story and emotions of the event. 15. Continuously educate oneself and stay up-to-date with latest trends and techniques.
